In the summer of 1816, a young, well-educated woman from England traveled with her lover, along with other friends to the Swiss Alps. Due to bad weather conditions, they were trapped inside. They decided to see who could come up with the best ghost story, at the request of Lord Byron, one of the friends who was with them, who was also a poet. The young woman, Mary Wollstonecraft Goodwin, won, creating a story creepy enough to belong with the stories they read in the Alpines, and a story which still gives readers goosebumps almost two centuries later.
